The Open Continuum Final Conference focused on the value of the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu (EUCEI) community research for the industry, highlighting the latest advancements and results of the Open Continuum CSA and the over 50 research and innovation actions it supported. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in engaging panel discussions, hear about the transition to the Nexus Forum CSA, and learn about the current status of the Unlock CEI CSA use cases. The conference also featured an awards ceremony recognizing the most promising projects within the community. aerOS project was represented by UPV.
The aerOS project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program, has officially launched its second round of Open Calls as of July 25, 2024. This initiative seeks to further advance the development and implementation of a cutting-edge meta operating system designed for the IoT edge-cloud continuum.
The second Open Call invites European SMEs, universities, research centers, and individuals to submit proposals that enhance the aerOS ecosystem. Proposals must focus on application sectors different from those in the current pilots and demonstrate a high Technology Readiness Level (TRL > 6). The selected proposals will receive funding to validate and improve the technical components of aerOS, contribute to its scalability, and promote its adoption across new verticals.
Interested parties must complete an online form and upload a supporting document through the aerOS Open Call submission platform. The submission period runs from July 25, 2024, to September 30, 2024, at 5 p.m. CEST. Detailed guidelines and evaluation criteria are provided in the Guide for Applicants.

During June, the Hellenic Cyber Security Institute, organised a workshop on the emerging EU regulation framework, including NIS2, CRA, DORA & AI Act. Our project was represented by Prof. Xenakis and InQbit – The Q-Bit Innovation.
Network slices are generally coupled with services and face service continuity/unavailability concerns due to the high mobility and dynamic requests from users. Network slice mobility (NSM), which considers user mobility, service migration, and resource allocation from a holistic view, is witnessed as a key technology in enabling network slices to respond quickly to service degradation. Existing studies on NSM either ignored the trigger detection before NSM decision-making or didn’t consider the prediction of future system information to improve the NSM performance, and the training of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agents also faces challenges with incomplete observations. To cope with these challenges, we consider that network slices migrate periodically and utilize the prediction of system information to assist NSM decision-making. The periodical NSM problem is further transformed into a Markov decision process, and we creatively propose a prediction-based federated DRL framework to solve it. Particularly, the learning processes of the prediction model and DRL agents are performed in a federated learning paradigm. Based on extensive experiments, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the considered baseline schemes in improving long-term profit, reducing communication overhead, and saving transmission time.

The 8th aerOS Plenary Meeting took place on 18 – 20 of June. The sessions were filled with enriching discussions on project tasks, engaging presentations on task issues, parallel technical meetings, and strategic planning for our next milestones. Our project manager shared administrative details, setting the stage for future initiatives. Participants also had the chance to visit our Pilot 2 premises, with special thanks to CloudFerro S.A. for hosting us. A big thank you to all participants and speakers for their incredible insights. We’re excited about what’s next for aerOS!
